Independence Gay: Week 1

Welcome to Independence Gay, Bryan Blanchard's weekly blog about his experience being a summer intern for BRAVO!. We love our intern blogs and hope you enjoy following Bryan!

Week 1

June 1-5, 2015

It’s not all red, white and blue here in Capitol Hill, especially with DC Pride just around the corner. One of the first clients I was introduced to at BRAVO! was Whitman-Walker Health. If there were ever a client that best represented this rainbow-studded city, it would have to be WWH. I'm getting a little ahead of myself though. Maybe I should tell you a little bit about me first.

So, hey! I'm Bryan. This feels a little bit like one of those awkward icebreakers you’re asked to take part in when you’ve joined a new group, but I don’t mind giving you a brief overview of me. I’ll try not to sound like a bad Tinder bio, either. Bear with me. I'm a coffee addict, salad enthusiast, avid runner and cardio queen. Since I moved to DC from the greater Pittsburgh area (a.k.a. a tiny farm town), I’ve whole-heartily adopted the new motto of “there’s time to sleep when you’re dead.” Basically, I'm ready to explore everything that the city has to offer, from this amazing internship opportunity to the DC nightlife. I came here knowing a couple people, but I’ve been collecting friends like a 90’s kid trying to catch every Pokémon. It’s only been a little over a week and I'm already in love with everything DC, well maybe I’ll leave the metro off that list.

Here at BRAVO!, I was welcomed with open arms by the rest of the team and that definitely made the transition a lot easier. There’s no way I can sit here and tell you I wasn’t nervous the first day, but now BRAVO! feels like an amazing fit. I also have to give credit to my fellow intern and friend, Jess, without whom I would have totally messed up my metro route to work.

After getting settled into the office minus the tech issues we were having with accounts, drives and plugless modems (thanks Tobias), I felt right at home in my new desk. I even Instagramed a picture, just so I could say how “on fleek” my intern desk was. However, this first week wasn’t all flowers and unicorns, although there were a few rainbows.

Our first event was Thursday, June 4. Only four days into my time at BRAVO! and it was time to get down to work helping the rest of the team bring this experience to life for WWH. Despite alphabetically deranged nametags or rogue ribbon my first event was so on point. After the miniature onslaught from near-drenched guests at registration, I was able to go up to the 6th floor and mingle with some of the WWH staff. The atmosphere was definitely different than any professional cocktail hour I’ve ever been to. It was evident the WWH VIP’s knew how to have a good time. The building was immaculate and the reception seemed to go off without any issues. Shout-out to the BRAVO! ladies because they are a hardworking team and I'm so happy to join them for the summer!

Our next event for the same client is Wednesday, June 10 and it’s going to be way more extravagant and fabulous, but I'm so ready to dive in. Like Lacey says, “hashtag event life, you never know what’s going to happen.” So until next week, stay fab!
