Traces of Capitol Hill: Week 2

Welcome to Traces of Capitol Hill, Tracy Parco's weekly blog about her experience being a fall intern for BRAVO!. We love our intern blogs and hope you enjoy following Tracy!

Week 2

September 7 - September 11, 2015

Hey everyone! Happy football season!

Life in DC has remained busy and full of excitement. This week, specifically, was a special week in the nation’s capital as it was the 14th anniversary of September 11th. On the 11th, I had the opportunity to visit the United States’ Capitol Building where I was given a private tour of the facility by Tom Fontana, the Director of Communications. To sum up the experience in a single word, it was surreal. As Fontana emphasized, 9/11 is a constant reminder to never take anything for granted and to always remember the importance of those fifty stars and thirteen stripes.

As for the second week here at BRAVO!, it was filled with meetings and preparations for our fall season. While we haven’t had our first event yet, I can see everything starting to slowly come together. This week, in particular, I found myself amazed and stunned at how much time and effort goes into a single event. I’m quickly learning that there are no small or insignificant decisions in the “events-life”—everything we do has a purpose and has been carefully researched and thought-out.

This week, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been assigned to work closely with Kensey, our Senior Project Manager, on Whitman Walker Health’s 25th Anniversary of the Mautner Project held here in Washington D.C. Kensey and I (and the rest of the BRAVO! team) are working hard to create an incredible event—and I’m not just saying that because I spent two hours researching disco balls this week. For the Mautner Project, we also had our very first visit to the Whitman Walker Health (WWH) headquarters where Blair, Madison, and I had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful WWH team. The WWH staff are some of the nicest and most eccentric individuals I’ve ever met, and I’m looking forward to working with them on various projects throughout the next couple months.

With that said, our first event is quickly approaching this coming Friday at the Hirshhorn Museum for the Smithsonian After Hours event, so I’m very excited to see how everything turns out! Hope everyone has a great week, and I’ll talk to you all next Monday!
