Week 2
September 7 - September 11, 2015
After only three weeks in Washington, I’m surprised at how at home I feel. I’ve already found great brunch spots, fun places to dance (although not well), the nearest Trader Joe’s, a street fair with fresh flowers and handcrafted jewelry, and even a threader I trust with my brows. I’m loving every moment of my time in this city. Attending a Nat’s game, thrift store shopping, wandering around the NW quarter in the rain, and taking a Capitol Building tour on 9/11 are only a few highlights from what is already my favorite semester by far.
On top of all this extracurricular fun, I’m also loving my time at BRAVO! Last week, I was asked what I am hoping for from this internship. As a strategic communications student with mainly public relations experience, I am here to learn what a career in events is truly about.
A few confessions: I’ve seen most episodes of “Say Yes to the Dress” and have always dreamed of meeting event coordinator David Tutera. “27 Dresses” is one of my very favorite movies and attending weddings brings me more joy than almost anything else. I purchase the occasional bridal magazine and browsing (or stalking) wedding photos on social media is one of my favorite hobbies.
I realize this sounds like a serious obsession, but I by no means have a “ring by spring” mentality. My love for weddings stems from their ability to bring people together to celebrate with everyone they care about most. They are meant to be truly joyful occasions that create lasting memories. I hope my career serves others, and contributing to the happiest day of someone’s life sounds like a fulfilling way to do so.
In reality, I know the real world of event planning is more than just weddings. I also know my role isn’t going to be just the glitz and glamour I see on TV and in the movies. This semester, I will get to experience the behind-the-scenes work it takes to make an event truly impactful. I can’t wait to jump in, work hard, and determine if this is something I want to pursue when I graduate next May. Our first event is this Friday, so stay tuned!
