Week 6

Perspective. Everything changes when you evaluate the same situation from different perspectives. Being able to view a situation from various points of view is thus, an essential tool for marketers and anyone that plays a role in the branding process. In the events world, it is impertinent to not only keep everything in perspective, in the larger context, but to be able to see things from the perspective of the client or the vendors or the guests at any given time. With perspective, comes patience and the ability to remain calm. As Nancy has explained to us, calmness and critical thinking are key components to a successful event, and if you are able to see things through others’ perspectives then it will be easier to think critically and creatively when faced with tough decisions.
This week, I visited the National Postal Museum, which currently has a PostSecret exhibit on display. PostSecret is a campaign that was started several years ago where people can write and mail postcards with their “secrets” anonymously, often in an artistic and unique way. The postcards are essentially only snapshots of people’s lives but they served as a reminder to me that everyone is going through something and to keep my day-to-day stress and problems in perspective.
On Saturday, I spent six hours urban gardening and giving back on both the local level planting fruits and vegetables for the nearby elementary schools—but at the cost of sounding like a stereotypical vegetarian—on a global level as well, helping and cultivating the Earth. In case you were wondering, yes I did wear my Kale sweatshirt the whole day. The experience was definitely a memorable one and although, I was exhausted and covered in a layer of dirt by the end of it, I’m glad I chose to spend my civic engagement experience outside gardening.
To finish out the week, I spent Sunday afternoon exploring a new area of DC and getting dinner with friends. In an attempt to go to Taste of DC, we ended up somewhere completely different, and found incredible Mexican food instead. Things don’t always go according to plan, but I’ve come to realize that everything happens for a reason. While it’s easy to let things quickly go to your head, or become overwhelming, it’s important to always remember: perspective.
