Week 6

October 5 - October 9, 2015

Worlds collided as two of my very best friends from different seasons of my life both visited DC last weekend. The meeting of Kate and Sarah (I lovingly call them Kath and Swest) was a moment I had anticipated forever, as my high school best friend and sorority little are two of the most important people in my life. I’m so glad—but not at all surprised—that they loved each other as much as I love them both!

Life is about to get crazy with midterms and events, and these girls were beyond patient with me as I began to stress for the first time this semester. I am so thankful for the quality time we spent together life-talking over home cooked meals, exploring Eastern Market, and chatting about the future. Our chill weekend of wine nights and fall flavored coffee dates was much needed, my wise-beyond-their-years best friends put what’s truly important back in perspective. They reminded me to look beyond my to-do list, focus on the bigger picture, and trust that there’s a greater plan.

Coming into this workweek, I’m still feeling a little overwhelmed. In our last all office meeting, Nancy spoke about the importance of maintaining a calm appearance and thinking critically, calling these the most important skills in our field. She said no matter how prepared we are, our team must always be willing to throw our plans out the window and take things as they come during an event. She compared this to live theater, where anything can happen when you’re on stage. Maintaining this low-stress, can-do attitude is something I strive for in work and in life, and this lesson couldn’t have been more timely!

With my friend’s personal and Nancy’s professional advice in mind, I’m going to keep calm and carry on into this week and the rest of the semester. I know the stress isn’t worth it, as everything will get done and life will unfold how it’s supposed to like it always does. Remembering this, I’m going to take some deep breaths, say a few extra prayers, and try my very best to focus on enjoying today without worrying about tomorrow. Wish me luck!
